Bowling Alley Reopening Meeting Set for next week.

By: Chris Hogan

Next Thursday and Friday Student Government Association CFO Chris Frost will be holding different two meetings on the possibility of the campus bowling alley reopening for next fall. Frost will be speaking on how there will be different fundraising opportunities that he will run in order to fund expenses for improvements for the bowling alley. A petition will also be available to sign at the meetings so it can be shown to the administration staff to prove that students would enjoy more entertainment on campus.

Thursday's meeting is scheduled at 9:30 p.m. in the Student Center Private Dining Room and Friday at 3 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room. All are welcomed to attend and please spread the word as we really want this project to work.

Frost told me the following today "The student body complains a lot that there isn't much to do [on campus] and with the bowling alley, there is going to be something to do with if its opens. Its something that not many schools have on campus and it would really be beneficial to the students here."

After debuting as a full time Division II women’s lacrosse program last spring, the Purple Knights who finished last season 0-11 were eager to start the 2012 campaign off right. Last Friday’s opening season road match against Post University saw the team pick up its first ever win with a 16-13 victory.
In the game, there were eight different scorers for the Purple Knights as freshman midfielder Gabrielle Valela scored a game high five goals in her first collegiate game and graduate student midfielder Lindsay Kehoe, who tallied four goals and six assists to lead the way.
Valela said that the team’s chemistry and ability to stick together were the focal points in earning the victory.
"As a team we all meshed very well and were determined to win,” she said. “When we were tied, we didn't give up, kept our composure and that's what teamwork is truly about. We kept up our intensity and stayed positive.”
Aside from Valela and Kehoe contributions, players including freshman attacker Emily Catalano chipped in with two goals and midfielder Shealyn Scully scored one goal and had two assists. The Purple Knights outshot the Eagles 36-23 and won more draw controls with a 21-10 advantage, which was a key factor in deciding the outcome of the match.
Freshman attacker Katie King, who scored a goal in her first collegiate game as well said even though she is new to the program, there is a lot to like going forward.
“I’m only a freshman but I know it’s a completely different team from last year,” King said. “Every player has their strong points and weaknesses. So as teammates we learned how each other play and try to help our teammates take advantage of their strong points.”
Next on the agenda for the Purple Knights will be a home opening match against Southern Connecticut State University on March 10 at 11 a.m. at Knights Field followed by Wilmington University on March 16 at 2 p.m.
“Our offense was all field smarts,” Valela said. “When we saw our opportunity to take the lane to goal we took it and when we didn't have it we pulled out and ran our plays. The bench played a big role in keeping us stay positive and helping us out when our players were open to pass them the ball to score. All in all we did a really great job today and it showed.

A 24 Year Hiatus no More

A 24 Year Hiatus no More

In order for UB to make a name for itself, there was a lot of chatter among the Student Programming Board [SPB] on how to bring back excitement to the campus this spring. Dating back to last October, the idea of having a spring concert was a student movement project that finally became a reality last week.
The consensus among SPB was that hip hop artist Jeremih would be the best fit to perform in the 2012 UB Spring Concert in April. The American garage rock band The Fleshtones, were the last to perform on campus in 1988.
Jeremih, is known for his 2009 hit single “Birthday Sex” and 2010 song “Down on Me” featuring 50 Cent. The decision to choose him came after 150-300 student surveys were conducted and the results revealed that hip-hop and R & B were the most popular music genre among the student body.
Darren Ganesh, President of SPB said that having a concert on campus will help bring the student body together.
“Being a part of the programming board and a member of the student government as well, I know student spirit is a big thing that the school needs to work on and it’s lacking,” Ganesh said. “It’s something we are trying to bring back. We are really trying to make a difference and shed a positive light on UB. It’s been 24 years and we think by all means this will be a very good step towards that direction.”
Majority of the student feedback that was received about Jeremih coming to perform was positive and some were even surprised based on their expectations according to Ganesh. Funding for the concert will cost the university between $15,000-20,000.  In order to handle the process of bringing an artist to come to campus, UB worked with an outside agency called Concert Ideas, based out of Woodstock, NY who is the biggest concert production company amongst colleges in the country.
After collaborating with Concert Ideas, Colleen Powers, Director of Campus Activities and Community Services said that there was a long process in order for the approval of Jeremih to perform at UB.
“We had to put in a bid letter, which had to be reviewed and signed by the administration on campus and once the bid was signed off here, it had to be submitted to the artist,” Powers said. “They accepted the bid and that’s how we knew the concert was definitely happening.”
Freshman Salihah Fairweather said she is very excited to see what Jeremih has to offer when he comes to campus.
“I think that as a freshman here at UB seeing an actual hip hop artist here is pretty awesome,” she said.  “All the students love him and I’ve never seen an actual hip hop artist before until this April. So I love the idea of him hosting the spring concert.”

Tickets for the concert will go on sale online Saturday, March 10 at 12 p.m. for all UB students for $20 with a $3 convenience fee at Bridgeport.edu/springconcert. There will be a link there to connect you to the appropriate site to purchase them. General admission tickets are $35 and will include a $3 convenience fee if bought online. You can also obtain a hard copy ticket at the Campus Activities office room 231 located at the John J. Cox Student Center starting on March 19. There will be no additional fee if purchased in the campus activities office. All tickets are non-refundable.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m. in Merten’s Theater.
“We are here to have a college experience,” Ganesh said. “Let’s have it and enjoy it.”

University of Bridgeport Bowling Alley

By: Chris Hogan

I am interested in writing a story on the UB Bowling Alley in the John J Cox Student Center that has been closed since the mid/late 1990's. If there are any UB Alumni/Faculty members out there that experienced/worked in the bowling alley that are willing to share their stories with me about it, I would like to hear them. The university is possibly looking into opening it again. Please email me at chogan@bridgeport.edu to tell me your experiences.

Thank you!!
