Could Seattle's Mike Carp be a target for Boston?

By: Chris Hogan

As the MLB offseason is nearly upon us, I have just completed a possible Boston Red Sox target that the team should look at it in possibly trading for this winter. It is Seattle Mariners Mike Carp, who is undervalued in Seattle.

My story on UB Bowling Alley

Who is ready to go Bowling?

By: Chris Hogan

Managing News Editor

For the past 12 years, the campus bowling alley located in the John J. Cox Student Center has been an eyesore and unattended to. Now as this spring semester comes to a close, there is a possibility that the bowling alley could be the next project on UB’s agenda this year.

The idea of reviving the bowling alley came after Student Government Association (SGA) Chief Finance Officer Chris Frost who had a vision before he graduated to help improve the entertainment on campus. With the assistance from George Estrada, Vice President of Facilities, the two have been collaborating on a game plan to find the best way possible to create a viable budget to make this project work.

“It was something that was my special project that I took when I joined SGA is to try to get the bowling alley open,” Frost said. “If students want it open and if we can show the administrators that we want it open, theoretically, we can get it open for the fall.”

In order to fully expense this massive project, Estrada said that the entire scheme would cost a little under $200,000, right around $185,000 based on a quote he recently received. The proposal includes spending $130,000 refurbishing existing equipment and other aspects of the space. It includes a new drop ceiling and floors, a brand new ball return and electronic scoring along with any other construction needed to get the place on par to open.

“We really have been able to reduce that by half of the anticipated cost it would have previous times that we tried to do this,” Estrada said. “What we are looking at now, is that I have to prepare a budget and business plan for this to be able to present to the president so that we can ultimately consider sources of funding for the project.”

When the student center was built in the 1960s, the bowling alley was used sparingly then and throughout the 1970s before closing until the late 1980s.

One UB alumni that played a vital role in revitalizing the bowling alley after many years on a hiatus was Brett Silberman. Silberman, who attended UB from 1988-1992, was a lifelong entrepreneur who decided with the help of his fellow classmate Steve Curry and friends/family to raise some money to restore and bring back the bowling alley. With that, he was able to raise $35,000 and the administration at the time agreed to a deal.

“We opened it up [during the Fall 1989 semester] and basically made it very inexpensive with the games and [we] were doing sorority nights, pajama nights and Greek weeks with as many as 50-60 showing up a night,” Silberman said in a phone interview. “It started going really well being it was really the only thing on campus at the time.”

Towards the end of the spring 1992 semester, the bowling alley closed due to financial problems and funding. Then in 1994, a gentleman named Geno Bizweski ran the place known as “Geno’s Bowling Alley” through early 1996. Cost back then was $2.00 per game or three games for $5. It wasn’t until late 1997 that the bowling alley would be used one last time occasionally before shutting down for good in early 2000 due to mechanical and funding issues.

In order for students to benefit from this project there have been different scenarios discussed so that bowling on campus wouldn’t be costly. A package of renting bowling shoes and three games for around $10 would be cheaper than going to a local place and spending close to $40 for two people and two games according to Frost. There is a possibility that an NCAA bowling team could be formed at UB if this project is completed.

“The student body complains a lot that there isn’t much to do [on campus] and with the bowling alley, there is going to be something to do if it’s opened,” Frost said. “It’s something that not many schools have on campus and it would really be beneficial to the students here.”

UB Lacrosse Team makes History

UB Lacrosse Team makes History
By: Chris Hogan
Managing News Editor
After debuting as a full time Division II women’s lacrosse program last spring, the Purple Knights who finished last season 0-11 were eager to start the 2012 campaign off right. Last Friday’s opening season road match against Post University saw the team pick up its first ever win with a 16-13 victory.
In the game, there were eight different scorers for the Purple Knights as freshman midfielder Gabrielle Valela scored a game high five goals in her first collegiate game and graduate student midfielder Lindsay Kehoe, who tallied four goals and six assists to lead the way.
Valela said that the team’s chemistry and ability to stick together were the focal points in earning the victory.
"As a team we all meshed very well and were determined to win,” she said. “When we were tied, we didn't give up, kept our composure and that's what teamwork is truly about. We kept up our intensity and stayed positive.”
Aside from Valela and Kehoe contributions, players including freshman attacker Emily Catalano chipped in with two goals and midfielder Shealyn Scully scored one goal and had two assists. The Purple Knights outshot the Eagles 36-23 and won more draw controls with a 21-10 advantage, which was a key factor in deciding the outcome of the match.
Freshman attacker Katie King, who scored a goal in her first collegiate game as well said even though she is new to the program, there is a lot to like going forward.
“I’m only a freshman but I know it’s a completely different team from last year,” King said. “Every player has their strong points and weaknesses. So as teammates we learned how each other play and try to help our teammates take advantage of their strong points.”
Next on the agenda for the Purple Knights will be a home opening match against Southern Connecticut State University on March 10 at 11 a.m. at Knights Field followed by Wilmington University on March 16 at 2 p.m.
“Our offense was all field smarts,” Valela said. “When we saw our opportunity to take the lane to goal we took it and when we didn't have it we pulled out and ran our plays. The bench played a big role in keeping us stay positive and helping us out when our players were open to pass them the ball to score. All in all we did a really great job today and it showed.

A 24 Year Hiatus no More

A 24 Year Hiatus no More

By: Chris Hogan
Managing News Editor
In order for UB to make a name for itself, there was a lot of chatter among the Student Programming Board [SPB] on how to bring back excitement to the campus this spring. Dating back to last October, the idea of having a spring concert was a student movement project that finally became a reality last week.
The consensus among SPB was that hip hop artist Jeremih would be the best fit to perform in the 2012 UB Spring Concert in April. The American garage rock band The Fleshtones, were the last to perform on campus in 1988.
Jeremih, is known for his 2009 hit single “Birthday Sex” and 2010 song “Down on Me” featuring 50 Cent. The decision to choose him came after 150-300 student surveys were conducted and the results revealed that hip-hop and R & B were the most popular music genre among the student body.
Darren Ganesh, President of SPB said that having a concert on campus will help bring the student body together.
“Being a part of the programming board and a member of the student government as well, I know student spirit is a big thing that the school needs to work on and it’s lacking,” Ganesh said. “It’s something we are trying to bring back. We are really trying to make a difference and shed a positive light on UB. It’s been 24 years and we think by all means this will be a very good step towards that direction.”
Majority of the student feedback that was received about Jeremih coming to perform was positive and some were even surprised based on their expectations according to Ganesh. Funding for the concert will cost the university between $15,000-20,000.  In order to handle the process of bringing an artist to come to campus, UB worked with an outside agency called Concert Ideas, based out of Woodstock, NY who is the biggest concert production company amongst colleges in the country.
After collaborating with Concert Ideas, Colleen Powers, Director of Campus Activities and Community Services said that there was a long process in order for the approval of Jeremih to perform at UB.
“We had to put in a bid letter, which had to be reviewed and signed by the administration on campus and once the bid was signed off here, it had to be submitted to the artist,” Powers said. “They accepted the bid and that’s how we knew the concert was definitely happening.”
Freshman Salihah Fairweather said she is very excited to see what Jeremih has to offer when he comes to campus.
“I think that as a freshman here at UB seeing an actual hip hop artist here is pretty awesome,” she said.  “All the students love him and I’ve never seen an actual hip hop artist before until this April. So I love the idea of him hosting the spring concert.”

Tickets for the concert will go on sale online Saturday, March 10 at 12 p.m. for all UB students for $20 with a $3 convenience fee at Bridgeport.edu/springconcert. There will be a link there to connect you to the appropriate site to purchase them. General admission tickets are $35 and will include a $3 convenience fee if bought online. You can also obtain a hard copy ticket at the Campus Activities office room 231 located at the John J. Cox Student Center starting on March 19. There will be no additional fee if purchased in the campus activities office. All tickets are non-refundable.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m. in Merten’s Theater.
“We are here to have a college experience,” Ganesh said. “Let’s have it and enjoy it.”

By: Chris Hogan

Coming off two impressive season opening victories against Post University and Southern Connecticut State University, the Purple Knights look to improve to 3-0 on the season when they host Wilmington University on Friday afternoon.

Valela leads the team in goals scored with 10 and Kehoe has eight goals and a team leading 16 points.  Also contributing are freshman attackers Emily Catalano and Katie King, who have each scored four goals  in their first collegiate season.

Wilmington University, comes to Bridgeport with the 2-1 overall record and recently lost to Millersville University 17-15 on Tuesday. University of Bridgeport Bowling Alley

By: Chris Hogan

I am interested in writing a story on the UB Bowling Alley in the John J Cox Student Center that has been closed since the mid/late 1990's. If there are any UB Alumni/Faculty members out there that experienced/worked in the bowling alley that are willing to share their stories with me about it, I would like to hear them. The university is possibly looking into opening it again. Please email me at chogan@bridgeport.edu to tell me your experiences.

Thank you!!

My thoughts on the Bruins moving Steve Kampfer

By: Chris Hogan

Coming into this season, most Bruins fans thought that defenseman Steve Kampfer, who had a solid rookie season with five goals and five assists in 38 would be able to crack the top six defense pairings. That wouldn't be the case as he would only appear in 10 games for the B's up until his trade to Wild on Monday.

Kampfer did show some offensive punch in the second half of last season but when Joe Corvo was acquire last July, it hurt his progress into cracking into the lineup on a consistent basis. It has been a roll coaster season as he missed six games early in the season with a Strained MCL and was playing in Providence over the past few months.

Dealing him to the Wild in my opinion will help his development going forward. He still has the potential to be a decent offensive defenseman like a Corvo  One aspect that is a positive to his game is his puck moving skills and shot from the point, which could help him in the future. His defensive game is still shaky and needs work as he was prone to turnovers during his brief Bruins stint. For the near future, it would be hard to imagine Kampfer being a Bruin with the recent extension of Johnny Boychuk and Dougie Hamilton waiting in the wing was most likely another deciding factor.
