Outlook on the hUB for Spring 2012 semester

Outlook on the hUB for Spring 2012 semester

By: Chris Hogan

Managing News Editor

As the second week of the semester is almost over with and everyone is settled in, the staff at Sodexo dining services have been hard at work in order to make the spring semester a successful experience for UB students. Many new menu items have been added and several improvements have kept the hUB running fluently.

When the hUB opened its doors last Sept. 22, the idea was for Sodexo to try and get accustomed to having a main area on campus for students to eat and relax in a convenient central location rather than in different locations including Knight's End Cafe, which was located in the Student Center.

Sodexo Resident Dining Supervisor Corey Baker said that the new changes being incorporated will benefit the student body.

"Right now, you can get anything you want in here that you got in Knight's End before," Baker said. "We took the student's advice [on what items they wanted], put it in there and it's here,"

Some of the new menu items that are being offered consist of Jamaican beef patties, chicken tenders, grilled cheese and mozzarella sticks.  Bagged candy has also been another top selling item. The hUB is now offering more weekly specials at Grill 155 with more options such as shrimp and sauteed items .Another possibility is that different sandwiches maybe offered at Star Ginger down the line.

Richard Groves, a Sodexo food service supervisor, said that the hUB will operate on many different levels in order to run smoothly.

"I am going to change up the menu by having more varieties and we are going to think of ways to embrace the commuter students with the way they are going through things economically," Groves said. "As we go along, things will get better for everyone."

Baker said that he will be available for students to be able to talk to him on Wednesday nights from 9-10 P.M. and voice their concerns or opinions about how they feel about the hUB in general. He mentioned that the grill was the most visited station last semester.

"Our three main cooks at Knight's End Tisha, Bill and Angel have given the student's excellent customer service and I think they should expect more great things with a variety of food this year, Groves said. "Come and eat and enjoy the food."

Why the Redsox should trade Lars Anderson

Why the Redsox should trade Lars Anderson

By: Chris Hogan

A few years ago, Redsox fans were expecting firstbase prospect Lars Anderson to someday become the everyday starter for the big league team but that has yet to happen. The arrival of All-Star Adrian Gonzalez in December 2010, stalled the arrival of Anderson and now leaves his future with the team is up in the air.

The best solution in my opinion? Trade him. Why? He has some value because he is still young at 24, showed improved plate discipline with AAA Pawtucket in 2011 and provides a solid glove at first. As we remember he was almost dealt to the Oakland Athletics back in July for starter Rich Harden, which ultimately fell through due to the Redsox being skeptical of Harden's medical records. Despite that, Anderson could still be trade bait for a left handed reliever or someone that can add some depth to the Redsox organization.

Some teams that could have interest in Anderson could be the San Francisco Giants, who could be looking for depth behind Aubrey Huff and Brandon Belt. Most believe Belt will play left field this year but Anderson could provide depth for them since the Giants are a struggling offensive team. Lefty Jeremy Affeldt could be a decent return if the Redsox involve another minor league prospect or so. The Cubs could be another fit as they are most likely to loose Carlos Pena to another team. Bryan Lahair is not the right fit for the Cubs at first and Anderson could be a cheap option for them.

Bottom line: Anderson has spent the past two years with the Pawsox and has not been called up to the big leagues until September. That means it is hurting the Redsox leaving him Triple A, in which they could trade him and acquire depth in other areas needed. I believe that he will most likely be dealt by the end of spring training. He has no future in Boston.
