UB and Sodexo welcome "The hUB" to campus
By: Chris Hogan
Managing News Editor
September 22 marked an important day on the UB campus as "The hUB" formally opened its doors to the community. It will be the new home for the student body to enjoy food and hangout with friends.
Introduction speeches by President Neil Salonen, Dean of Students Kenneth Holmes and Vice President of Grounds and Facilities George Estrada led off the processions followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The hUB saw 400 people stop by during the first hour and a half of its opening and in total served 600.
Estrada said that from the get go the food court produced a lot of positive vibes.
"We are very excited and we kind of feed off the energy of the students and can feel that there is a great energy with this new facility," he said. "I think it is going to be a very well received addition to the overall student body here."
There was a big student push over the past year for having a place that entails late night dining on campus and the demand helped Sodexo expand the hours till 11 p.m. every day. The main food stations include Star Ginger, an Asian style grill and noodle bar, Ultimate Baja, a south of the border Mexican style place and Grill 155, a sandwich station.
Jenn Currier, General Manager of UB Dining Services said that the feedback received was encouraging.
"Everyone liked the new food offerings," Currier said. "They were really happy with the Star Ginger pieces, the freshness of the product and the difference of the menus now. [They were looking for] Something [that has] better varieties for them to choose from as opposed to what Knights End [Café] used to be."
Each station has a wide variety of food items and everything is priced under eight dollars. Star Ginger's menu consists of Thai BBQ Chicken that is served with yellow curry sauce along with jasmine rice and Asian slaw.
Another is the Noodle Bowls that comes in chicken, beef or vegetarian style. The Ultimate Baja has everything from burritos, tacos and nachos to taco salads. Finally Grill 155 offers a variety of burger choices such as the ultimate double burger, turkey and black bean veggie burgers. It also has sandwiches including
Chicken and Philly Cheesestakes.
"It [the hUB] is a lot different than Marina [and Knight's]," sophomore Maliek Sterrett said. "It actually makes me want to eat [here] and I see myself coming here a lot with the variety of food it offers."
As for Knight's End Café, it will be converted into a self-serve dining area until next summer. Estrada said that the space will be accessible for students to study and use the new concession based vending machines with items such as drinks and frozen meals. By the next fall, its kitchen will be gutted and the future space usage will be determined by Estrada and Dean Holmes.
The hUB will see promotional items run throughout the year as well as planning to have student groups run special events.
"The bottom line is that there is a trust factor here and they [UB community] know we are here to serve the food and students the best way we can," Resident Dining Supervisor Corey Baker said. "We are here for UB and the students first and foremost."

Knight's End Cafe Update
Update on Knight's End Cafe and its Future
By: Chris Hogan
Much of the UB community is wondering with The "hUB" opening its doors as the new place on campus for dining, what will happen to Knights End Cafe? The answer is that will be turned into a temporary space for students to spend their time throughout the day.
George Estrada, Vice President of Grounds and Facilities said that Knight's will be converted into a self-serve dining area until next summer. Several vending machines with drinks and frozen/prepackaged meals will be added and students will be able to study or hang out there too. The entire kitchen will be gutted after the spring 2012 semester ends and the future use of it still has to be determined by Estrada along with Dean of Students Kenneth Holmes.

UB Cruises past Caldwell College
By: Chris Hogan
Managing News Editor
Bridgeport men's soccer head coach Brian Quinn called Thursday night's game vs Caldwell College his team's best effort of the 2011 season as the Purple Knights won 6-0. The game featured balanced scoring up and down the lineup despite not having the services of forward's Patric Brundin and Markus Naglestad, who both missed the game due to minor injuries.
There were six different goal scorers in the game for Bridgeport and it started in the 15th minute when junior Arnold Hitoaliaj took a great pass from sophomore Danny Ruiz and buried it past Caldwell's Brian Agostini. Ruiz, would also score his first collegiate goal and tally another assist for a total of three points on the night. Other goal scorers for the Purple Knights were Lee Middleton, Andreas Blanke who also scored his first collegiate goal, Juan Galarza and Jon Artistizabal.
"It was a good performance and we knew this group [Caldwell] was a very dangerous team," Quinn said. "The guys were well aware of that and were super focused coming out the U-Mass Lowell game."
In addition to the balanced scoring, the bench play once again put on a solid performance as three players recorded at least a point, and contributed in ways to help the Purple Knights improve to 3-1 on the season. Over the past two games off the bench, Aristizabal has recorded two goals and one assist.
"We have a great bench and whoever steps out onto the field, will play well and have the confidence that we have [as a team] ," Ruiz said. "Everyone is here for a reason"
Another key factor was that UB outshot the Cougars 20 to 8 and eight different players had at least one shot on goal.
"We stayed consistent throughout the whole game like we did against U-Mass Lowell and our bench played well which was key," Goalkeeper Danny Hernandez said. "It was our best effort since we kept the ball moving and defensively we were aggressive and didn't give them anything."
On Saturday, the Purple Knights will travel to Mercy College, who are 3-1-1 and begin conference play. Last season, UB defeated the Mavericks 1-0 at Knights Field and have won the past three meetings between the two schools. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m..
"This [game] was our best overall effort and we gave more effort in the three games leading up to this but the quality didn't approach this," Quinn said. "It was a tremendous [performance tonight]."

Brian Quinn, head coach of the UB men's soccer team, said that Franklin Pierce will be a tough match up.
"It will be a different type of test but it is going to be the same level of attack and test for us," Quinn said. You are going to have to go in and play without Devon [Thomas] and it will alittle bit hotter since it [the game] will be in the middle of the afternoon versus the evening where it is alittle cooler. Our depth is going to be a question when we go up there."

UB Women's Soccer Game Recap
Colley and Kenny help UB beat AIC in home opener.
By: Chris Hogan
Friday night's came proved that the 2011 UB Women's Soccer Team could remain a solid bunch despite loosing three valuable seniors with their 2-1 win over American International College. The goal scoring of the game came from Seniors Julia Colley, who made the transition this year from goalkeeper to midfielder and forward Kasey Kenny, who only appeared in seven games last season after suffering a torn ACL. Sophomore goalie Julie Hansson saved eight shots for the Purple Knights. Bonnie Boornazian scored the only goal for the Yellow Jackets with the assist coming from Caroline Boyce.
UB Women's Soccer Head Coach Magnus Nilerud:
On the win: "I am very pleased [with the win] and they [the women soccer players] played a lot better than I thought. They were much calmer under pressure and I thought they were able to handle themselves."
On Julia Colley's game tonight: "She had a fantastic game and she is so strong. She is very technical [when playing the game], and posted as a threat tonight when she went up front. It was a great finish obviously [when she scored the goal]."
On having Kasey Kenny back from an injury last season: " [She was] huge. The way she was able to move in and out of the box tonight was critical "
What to expect from the bench this season: "The bench is going to be very important when you get further in the season as you go along. That is one of the areas we struggled in the past but every kid we put in there is not a bad option [for us]. Everyone is good enough to play and they will be important as we go further in the season."
On U-Mass Lowell for Sunday's game: "They are a different team [than AIC] and more physical. Its going to be a much more difficult game."
Junior forward/midfielder Becky Wallis
On tonight's win: "I think we did pretty good and we had to work more as a team because we don't have the players we once did. We worked really well together tonight despite it being the first time playing together this season."
On Julia Colley's game: "She did good and stepped up because we were lacking the height [advantage] in forwards.
On expectations this season: "We are trying to get everyone on the same page and experience and go far by winning the ECC's. [We want to] get into the NCAA Tournament and win [it all]."
On her own expectations: "I don't want to mess up for my team especially since I am playing a new position. I hope me and Gabby [Trombley] and the rest of D keep it away from goalie."
Senior midfielder Julia Colley
On the win tonight: "I think we surprised ourselves a lot more and showed how well we can play. We have to keep the standards up to that. Its fun playing up there [as a midfielder and as a new position]. The whole team has really good work ethic by our quickness and by playing very well together despite only practicing for a few weeks."
On the goal scoring and leadership this season by the team: "I think as each game goes on we are going to get to know each other a lot better by how we run and work together. There is going to be more goals that will come out of it since we managed to get a few scrappy ones today."
One the new players this season. "Magnus is expecting a lot from them especially since he is starting them in such [important positions]. [Freshman midfielder] Jill [Hwang] is really good in the back and helps the whole defensive line. They bring a lot of energy."
Looking Ahead: On sunday, the Purple Knights will take on U-Mass Lowell from the Northeast-10 Conference. UB last hosted the Riverhawks in Sept. 2009 when the game ended in 0-0 tie and beat them 2-1 in OT last year in Lowell, MA. The game will start on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Knights Field and admission is free to the game.
